When Neighbors Ask: Electric Supply Prices Have Increased Across Our Region

June 20, 2025
What do you say when a friend, family member or neighbor asks a question about a specific topic pertaining to FirstEnergy? Here is some information you may want to share if you’re asked about energy supply price increases.
Due to increases in the price of energy, most customers will pay more for electric supply – the actual energy they use – beginning June 1, 2025. The supply price increases are driven by market conditions, including lower supply and higher demand, that are impacting all electric supply prices across our region. In the deregulated states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, we do not generate electricity or control supply prices. We deliver electricity to customers’ homes and businesses and collect supply costs on behalf of suppliers.
You can help friends and family understand what is happening and share programs and resources to help them take control of their energy budget.
First, understanding their electric bill is important, and it has two main parts:
- Delivery charge: This is the cost for their electric company to deliver electricity to their home or business. These charges are not impacted by changes in supply price.
- Supply charge: This covers the cost of the actual electricity used. Customers in Ohio, New Jersey and Pennsylvania can choose to purchase electricity from a competitive supplier or receive it from their FirstEnergy electric company through the default service, known as Price to Compare (PTC), Standard Service Offer (SSO) or Basic Generation Service (BGS).

Programs Available to New Jersey Customers
In New Jersey, special programs approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) are being implemented by all electric companies in the state to help ease the impact of higher supply prices this summer. They include:
- A $30 deferral credit on all residential bills in July and August. The credit will be recovered through a $10 monthly charge from September through February when electricity use is lower.
- A limited suspension of service shut offs in July, August and September, providing protection for certain vulnerable customers.
- Waived reconnection fees from July 1 – Sept. 30.
- Enhanced deferred payment agreements, or payment plans, allowing customers to spread past-due balances over up to 24 months instead of 12 months.
