Today is Earth Day

April 22, 2020

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Celebrate and do your part with these ideas from the Corporate Responsibility Task Force, the Utilities Group Green Team and others.

Pick up trash in your community. Find a local spot that looks like it needs a little TLC. Grab the kids, some gloves and trash bags and give the area a lift.

Plant a pollinator garden. It doesn’t have to be big – you can create one by using flowerpots which could turn into a mini-oasis on your porch, deck or patio. Whether you want to go big, or keep things small, this site has the information you need to get started.

Conserve water with a rain barrel. Rain barrels capture water from a roof and hold it for use on lawns and gardens. They can be ordered online or sometimes purchased from a local garden center. If you don’t have a lot of room, leave a few buckets outside to catch raindrops you can use to water your pollinator garden.

Try composting. It’s a great way to add nutrients to soil while keeping waste out of the landfill. This site can help you get started.

Reuse and recycle. If you’re like most people, you’ve got your eye on some serious home decluttering projects right now. Be sure to reuse and recycle – or donate — as many items as possible.
