Steep Hills, Unshakeable Spirit

November 1, 2025

The FirstEnergy Akron Marathon runs on the energy of volunteers — and this year, thanks to our employees, participation nearly tripled!

They helped kick off the week by packing more than 6,500 food bags to help runners refuel after crossing the finish line and assisting runners at the Health & Fitness Expo. On race day, employees were there from start to finish — driving the electric pace car, escorting runners by bike, distributing energy gel packets and supporting recycling efforts at the FirstEnergy Finisher Festival.

Volunteers brought enthusiasm and teamwork to every role, creating a memorable experience for runners and spectators alike. Many said the best part was connecting with coworkers outside the office. “I had a great time meeting and volunteering with new FirstEnergy friends,” said JaCara Cox, Customer Account Specialist, Ohio Customer Accounts.

Energetic Spirit at Every Turn

This year, 65 FirstEnergy employees tackled the racecourse. Construction rerouted the starting line, giving runners an early uphill challenge on a course already known for its steep climbs. Despite the tough terrain, runners found strength in the energy and support along the Blue Line.

“The energy from the crowd was phenomenal. I was enthralled by the community involvement and all neighborhood kids cheering on the runners,” said Krish Sundresh, FirstEnergy contractor in the Project Management group and first-time Akron Marathon participant.

Other employees tackled the course in pairs. Thomas Yourkiewicz, Line Service Worker, Ohio Operations, ran with his wife Liz. Both first-time marathoners, he said, “We had a great time at the race and can’t wait until next year!”

Volunteering with Purpose: Rhiannon’s Race Tradition

For one employee, volunteering is more than a one-time experience, it’s a tradition. After completing dozens of races herself, including her first full Akron Marathon in 2023, Rhiannon Stevenson, Manager, Supply Chain, knows just how vital volunteers are to the race experience.

For the past five years, she’s volunteered at every Akron Marathon Race Series event, earning volunteer pins to showcase alongside her race medals.

“I’m a person who likes to see my accomplishments,” she said. “The Akron Marathon’s volunteer pins are designed to match each year’s race medals, and I love that I can display them all side by side in my office.”
