Spring Weather Can Change Fast: Be Storm-Ready
April 25, 2026
As spring arrives and you spend more time outdoors, you’re likely enjoying fresh air and activities like gardening, outdoor sports and backyard projects.
As the season changes, it’s important to stay alert for spring storms that can bring strong winds, heavy rain and lightning. By taking a few simple precautions, you can help keep yourself and others safe no matter the weather.
Prep Like a Pro Before the Winds Blow
Severe weather can increase the chance of an extended power outage. This is a good time to remind friends and family how to prepare now for whatever Mother Nature has in store:
- Sign up for outage alerts and text messaging to get updates if they lose power.
- Know how to report a power outage.
- Assemble an emergency kit with the following items:
- Fully charged devices and car charger
- Flashlight, portable radio and extra batteries
- First-aid kit
- Bottled water and convenience foods that don’t require cooking
- Personal health items
Flying Toys Don’t Mix with Live Wires
High winds can quickly turn everyday items into airborne hazards. If a storm is forecast, secure loose items and stay alert. Objects can become tangled in power lines or damage electrical equipment, creating dangerous situations.
If an object is stuck in power lines, never attempt to retrieve it. Call 888-LIGHTSS and we’ll take care of it.
Storm Cleanup Starts with Caution
If a spring storm leaves a mess behind, always treat downed or low-hanging power lines as live and dangerous. They can remain energized – or become energized – without warning and even energize the ground.
Follow these downed line safety tips:
- Stay at least 30 feet away from the line and anything it may be touching.
- If something gets caught in or near power lines, never try to retrieve it yourself.
- Call 9-1-1 to report a downed power line.
