In Memoriam: Jay S. Pifer

January 20, 2022

Jay S. Pifer, former Allegheny Energy executive, passed away on Jan. 16 at the age of 84. He was living in Aiken, S.C.

Prior to his retirement in 2003, Jay served as Allegheny Energy’s interim president and CEO and then chief operating officer. Before that, he was president of Allegheny Power and president of its subsidiaries – West Penn Power, Monongahela Power and Potomac Edison. His career with the company spanned 42 years.

“Jay was a dynamic leader who made every employee feel like a valued member of the Allegheny team,” said Linda Moss, regional president, Met-Ed. “He was instrumental in creating a unified organization when the three operating companies merged to become Allegheny Power. He also had the uncanny ability to remember not only employees’ names, but also the names of their spouses, children and even family pets.”

A pastor of the United Methodist Church, Jay retired from the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference, with 36 years serving as pastor of various United Methodist churches.

Jay was active in a number of business and community organizations, serving on the Board of Directors of the Energy Corporation of America, and as president of the Boy Scouts of America Westmoreland-Fayette Council. He served as trustee of Waynesburg (Pa.) University and was on the boards of the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg and the University of South Carolina-Aiken.

Jay is survived by Betty – his wife of 63 years – three children and seven grandchildren.
