From the Fairways to the Front Lines

Firestone Country Club has a long-standing tradition of hosting world-class, professional golf in Akron and the impact of these PGA tournaments extends far beyond the fairways and into the community. Since 1984, golf events at Firestone have raised more than $29 million for area charities, including $825,000 from the 2019 Bridgestone Senior Players Championship and the Ambassador of Golf event.
“Thanks to our title sponsor, Bridgestone, founding partners Westfield and FirstEnergy as well as other supporters, the Bridgestone Senior Players will continue to benefit key charities in our area that have meant so much to Northeast Ohio in recent times,” said tournament director Don Padgett III.
Last year, $825,000 was raised through the Ambassador of Golf event and the tournament. Some of the benefiting organizations include: the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Akron Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Akron General, The First Tee of Greater Akron, Summa Health System, United Way of Summit County and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
“These non-profit organizations are working tirelessly on the front lines to help our community persevere through the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 crisis. They’re supporting families and individuals in our community when they needed it most, and now it’s our turn to support them,” said Lorna Wisham, vice president, Corporate Affairs and Community Involvement. “Our support for the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship stems from our commitment to these transformative organizations and our dedication to helping them improve the vitality and well-being of this region,” Lorna continued.
Due to health concerns related to COVID-19, there will be no spectators on the course during the Aug. 13-16 tournament and this year’s Ambassador of Golf event was cancelled, but efforts are still underway to raise funds to support the benefitting charities*.
