Be a Safe Winter Walker

January 25, 2022

Winter is here. The snow and ice brought on by sub-freezing weather can lead to slips, trips and falls. Here are some tips for safely navigating winter walking hazards – on and off the job.

  • Walk in areas that have been cleared of snow and ice, when possible. Don’t take shortcuts through non-pedestrian areas.
  • Walk slowly – taking smaller steps and keeping your feet under your knees. Avoid sudden changes of direction.
  • Watch for holes, ruts, cracks or other depressions. Remember that snow can hide these fall hazards.
  • Make sure you have the proper winter footwear (typically boots with a good aggressive tread in a diamond style pattern). If your job assignment requires working in prolonged snowy/icy conditions, consider using winter-traction overshoe devices.
  • Avoid carrying loads – if possible – and never carry materials which obstruct your view.
  • Keep both hands free (not in your pockets) for balance.
  • Always use handrails when climbing stairs.
  • Alert others to slip, trip and fall hazards.
