A Fond Farewell to Louie the Lightning Bug

November 2, 2025

Some characters make brief appearances in our lives. Others leave a lasting impression.

Louie the Lightning Bug has been part of the FirstEnergy story and many utility companies nationwide for decades. After 50 years of service, Louie is officially retiring his wings.

Looking Back

Originally created by Alabama Power, Louie was designed to help teach children about electrical safety. Over time, he was licensed by more than 50 utility companies including FirstEnergy, becoming a familiar and friendly figure in safety education.

Louie’s presence was felt across generations in our service area. He danced through the FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, marched in parades and brought smiles to school assemblies and safety fairs. He was a bright spot at events like the Alzheimer’s Walk, always full of energy and enthusiasm.

Employee Reflections

Over the years, dozens of employees have stepped into the role of Louie the Lightning Bug helping bring joy and safety awareness to communities across our service area.

“I’ve had the privilege of being Louie at many events over the years, and each time was special. People often told me they felt a different energy when I put on the suit – and that’s because I turned my personality up to 100. I took great pride in representing FirstEnergy and always gave it my all.” – Luke Anderson, Advanced Business Analyst, Emergency Preparedness

“It was an honor to represent FirstEnergy as Louie and serve the community in this unique way. Seeing the smiles on kids’ faces and them wanting to give you a hug made being Louie an amazing experience.” – Matt Kasinecz, Transmission Project Manager IV

Thank you, Louie, for the memories, the lessons and for making safety shine.
