Important Security Updates for iPhones, iPads are Available

April 6, 2022

FirstEnergy Cyber Security recommends that employees plan in their personal budgets for the routine replacement of personal devices such as laptops, tablets and phones to ensure they are always able to get the latest, secure software available. While these devices are not inexpensive, the cost of recovery from a serious identity theft case could be much higher than that of replacing the device.

On March 31, 2022, Apple released iOS 15.4.1 for iPhones and iPads that fixes a critical security vulnerability. iOS is the software (called an operating system) that is the core application on iPhones and iPads that runs all the other apps. FirstEnergy users with an iPhone and iPad have already been notified to update their devices. However, FirstEnergy personnel and their families who own iPhones and iPads are encouraged to install this important update.

Criminals are known to be actively exploiting this security vulnerability in all iPhone and iPad devices. If the device user is tricked into opening a phishing e-mail or a malicious link – for example, from a spam text – criminals can cause the device to do anything they want – notably to steal your data. Installing updates can often be done automatically, subject to certain conditions such as remaining battery life. For personal devices, Apple publishes directions* on how to update iOS software and how to enable automatic updates.

Note that FirstEnergy-owned iPhones and iPads cannot be updated this way and users should follow directions sent by IT.
