Honoring a Legacy of Service

February 25, 2022
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only U.S. holiday designated as a National Day of Service, encouraging all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Even though in-person activities for MLK Day of Service were cancelled due to health and safety precautions, FirstEnergy employees still found ways to support this community initiative. Here are a few examples.

A group of employees in our JCP&L service area participated in a MLK Day virtual reading program. The event benefitted the Neighborhood House in Morristown, N.J.

(L.) Mike Schoen, supervisor, Customer Support, and a member of our Veterans and Allies Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG), did his part at a MLK Day of Service blood donation drive at St. Kateri Church in Sparta, N.J. (R.) The West Virginia University Children’s Hospital (WVUCH) received 31 donated books from Women in Leadership West Virginia and four from Helping Women Grow – Fairmont. Karen Gainer, distribution technician II-lines (r.), presents the books to Jason Hostetler, WVUCH.

Students at the 10th & Green Elementary School in Reading (Pa.) enjoyed a virtual reading program with our employees. Volunteers included Jacquelyn Lojek, supervisor, Transmission Project Management (bottom r. in screenshot); Jennifer Rivera, consultant, Regional External Affairs (Met-Ed); and Marnell McCarthy, Customer Account specialist IV.
In lieu of an in-person volunteer event, Toledo Edison employees shared their thoughts and feelings in relation to Dr. King’s iconic I Have a Dream speech. Their tributes are in the graphic below.
