Due to social distancing and closure of seasonal attractions and events, it’s been a challenge to bring normalcy to a not-so-normal summer. Many of us have turned our backyards into outdoor retreats, some are having small family gatherings within safety guidelines and others have acquired a green thumb through gardening.
For Vita Moore, manager, FEU Claims, it’s participating in the Akron Running Project.
This year, the first two races of the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon – the National Interstate 8k & 1 Mile, and the Goodyear Half Marathon & 10k – were cancelled due to the pandemic. So, members of the Akron running community wanted to keep participants focused on their fitness goals and have a way to continue their race training. As a result, the Akron Running Project was established. The project is a collaboration of the Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation, Akron businesses, running crews and organizations who share a passion for the sport.
Vita became involved with the project through her daughter, Maria, who ran for The University of Akron’s cross country and track team.
“My four children have always been runners – from middle school through college. I started running when FirstEnergy offered the opportunity to participate in the Akron Marathon,” said Vita. “Maria was involved in establishing the Akron Running Project by creating its website, and that’s how I got involved.”
This no-cost program was designed to keep current runners motivated and to attract new walkers, runners and other sports enthusiasts. Local health and fitness partners offer daily training tips, free workouts, weekly challenges, incentives, free give always and monthly offers, shared digitally through social media. Participants can provide their experiences as well.
“What’s great is that it’s all inclusive – all ages, amateur runners, elite runners, walkers, cyclists, hikers – it doesn’t matter. It’s just the fact of getting out and doing it. And there are so many topics offered, such as nutrition information, training tips, coaching from local fitness experts and more,” said Vita.
Vita said the Akron Running Project is simple to join.
“There are no fees – just fun!” she said.
