Taking Care of Our Kids

October 3, 2019

Summer camps, special programs, school supplies and more – the FirstEnergy Foundation provides much-needed support to the children in our service area.

The Foundation provided a $1,100 check to Collier Youth Services for a Mobile STEAM Museum at Kateri Summer Day Camp for underprivileged youth in Marlboro, N.J. Each summer, more than 175 attendees between the ages of 5-13 spend seven weeks hiking, swimming, playing, crafting, reading and making friends. The museum offered hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) learning. From buzz wires to programmable robots, music makers to 3-D printing, the kids were able to experience high-tech fields of study that many of them would not have access to otherwise.

For the fourth year, the Foundation sponsored the council’s Electricity Merit Badge Program. Scouts can earn the badge by demonstrating how to respond to electrical emergencies, understanding and defining electrical terms, energy conservation, understanding electric meters and electric bills, and showing knowledge of fusing and overloading of circuits. The Tecumseh Council serves more than 3,000 youth members in 129 units across five counties.
