Whether it’s electrical safety demonstrations at local schools, community safety initiatives or safety events for family and friends at our plants, we’re committed to keeping safety in the forefront of all we do.

Recently, our Toledo Edison and Ohio Edison employees helped install smoke detectors in customers’ homes as part of the American Red Cross Sound the Alarm event. This was the second year Toledo Edison participated, and 28 employee volunteers installed 203 smoke alarms in 70 homes, while providing vital home fire safety information. In addition, the FirstEnergy Foundation contributed $2,000 to the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio for this event.

“Home fires continue to be a major issue here in northwest Ohio, with one occurring every 19 hours,” said Brad Gillespie, manager, Customer Accounts, who coordinated the event. “Knowing that we made a difference is truly a humbling experience. The Toledo Edison team shined through their compassionate volunteer efforts.”

It was the first year for Ohio Edison volunteers to participate, with 28 volunteers installing 171 detectors in the greater Akron area. “It’s wonderful to see our employees come out to support such an important community effort,” said Murphy Montler, director, External Affairs. “It shows they really care about the community and our customers.”
