Potomac Edison’s Relief Refunds: When Neighbors Ask

September 16, 2025
What do you say when a friend, family member or neighbor asks a question about a specific topic pertaining to FirstEnergy? For example, the first of two automatic Potomac Edison bill credits scheduled to assist residential customers in Maryland will begin this month. What follows is some information you may want to share.
- Potomac Edison residential customers in Maryland will see some relief on their electric bills through the Legislative Energy Relief Refund. The refund is part of the Next Generation Energy Act passed in April by the Maryland General Assembly.
- This refund is intended to help ease the burden of rising electricity costs for families.
- If eligible, residential customers will automatically receive two bill credits – one in September and another in January or February 2026. There is no need to sign up or apply to receive a refund.
- To qualify for the first credit, customers must have:
- An active Potomac Edison residential electricity account as of June 1, 2025.
- Recorded electricity usage between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025.
- An account that is active when the credit is applied.
- The credited amount will vary by household. Credits are based on a household’s average electricity use over a 12-month period ending on March 31, 2025.
- These bill credits are funded through payments made by utilities and electricity suppliers under Maryland’s renewable energy laws. These credits will not be charged back to our customers.
