A National Framework for Responding to Emergencies

September 9, 2021

FirstEnergy President and CEO Steve Strah provides his insights in an article on “The National Response Event Framework and Mutual Assistance” in the September/October 2021 issue of Electric Perspectives, a publication of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI).

The National Response Event (NRE) framework, developed in the wake of Superstorm Sandy in 2012, has “cultivated a venue for collaboration that strengthens our ability to prepare for, and to recover from, storms and other disasters,” notes Steve in the story. “The evolution of the NRE framework has driven unprecedented improvements to processes and to the coordination of sharing personnel and equipment during emergencies.”

He also points out the benefit of bolstering the industry’s human networks. Whereas electric companies previously operated in parallel without consistent communication, the framework has cultivated frequent interaction between industry leaders and staff that has strengthened understanding and partnership.

“This further demonstrates that our efforts to build resiliency cannot be limited to the physical and cyber hardening of our infrastructure.

Steve concludes: “I am proud that the FirstEnergy team is fully engaged with the networks and platforms that support our sector’s unique culture of collaboration.”
