Honoring Those Who Serve

August 3, 2021

Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day are usually reserved for recognizing those who served our country. However, FirstEnergy employees honor veterans year-round. Here are a few examples.

Members of the FirstEnergy East-N.J. Veterans & Allies Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG) assembled poppy plants to be sold as part of a local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) “Buddy Poppies” fundraiser.

L.-r.: Bob Flynn, consultant, Regional External Affairs; Pat Conley, supervisor, Regional Operations; Frank Luna, consultant, Regional External Affairs; and Walter Kovacs, manager, Operations Services. Elaine Vincent, advisor, Community Involvement, and Lesa McGuinness, specialist, Customer Accounts and FirstEnergy East-N.J. EBRG lead, also participated.

On behalf of our Veterans & Allies EBRG, employees in the Penn Power service territory supported the Community Foodbank of Mercer County – Military Share Program food distribution. Volunteers assisted veterans and active military and their families at the Farrell Army Base in Farrell, Pa. Our employees helped with setup/cleanup and loading approximately 90 vehicles for the drive-thru distribution of dairy, meat, produce and beverages.

Thirty-five employees braved nasty weather to place flags at veterans’ gravesites on the Woodlawn Historic Cemetery in Toledo. Nearly 6,000 veterans are laid to rest at the cemetery. Usually, 80 to 90 volunteers show up on Fridays, but on this day only 42 made it due to the inclement weather. Our volunteers were able to place nearly 1,800 flags. John Wismer, manager, Claims, coordinated this event on behalf of our Veterans & Allies EBRG.
